Chelsea, our founder · Austin, Texas

It started with
a dog named Bluebell.

Not a business plan. A dog, a color, and a stove that ran out of room.

Shallot.Bluebell.

Two purples,
one very good dog.

Bluebell

Chelsea had a dog named Bluebell. When Bluebell died, the kitchen got quiet.

Some time later she learned that Le Creuset had made a purple called Bluebell. She didn’t think about it much. She just started looking, and she bought every piece she could find until there was nothing left to find.

The pots

Those pots are on her stove in Austin today, next to the Shallot she already loved. Shallot and Bluebell. Her two purples. Ask her about them and you will be there a while.

The idea

The pots were already the most personal things in her kitchen. But every one of them had the same plain knob on the lid. She wanted them to feel even more like hers. A flower for spring. Something a little ridiculous for Halloween. A knob you could change on a whim, without changing the pot.

Nobody made that. So she started making it.

Austin

Chelsea was born and raised in Austin, Texas, and so was Hot to Handle. The knobs are made by hand, in small runs, with local artists and craftspeople. We think you can tell when a person made something. We want you to be able to tell.

What we care about.

Three things, in this order.

The pot comes first.
You already made the investment. Anything we put on it has to be worth it, from the grip to the finish, and it has to come off without a trace.
Hands, not lines.
Every knob is shaped and finished by a person. Small runs, local makers, no shortcuts.
Your kitchen, your rules.
Loud, quiet, seasonal or strange. The knob is the smallest thing on the lid and the easiest thing to change.

What’s your pot’s story?

Start with something you love. Add something that’s yours.
